Phase one of a two stage project to interconnect four former townhouses, now grade II listed, to create an administrative centre for each of Birkbeck’s five academic schools. The buildings had not been upgraded since the 1950’s, when much inappropriate alteration work had been done. All approvals were obtained and the first phase of work completed over carefully planned period involving the installation of all new heating, power, lighting and data. The restoration of the cantilevered stair and the reinstatement of the Portland stone floor to the entrance and hallway to No. 28 was a significant achievement given the tight programme.
